Discount Calculator
Work out the sale price after a percentage discount, how much you save, and what tax adds back on.
Updated 14 Oct 2026
A 30.0% discount on 2,500.00 saves 750.00, bringing the price to 1,750.00.
Enter the original price and the discount percentage. The calculator shows the amount saved and the final price, with an optional tax rate applied after the discount.
What is the Discount Calculator?
A discount reduces a price by a percentage of that price. This calculator shows both the final amount and the saving, and can apply tax afterwards — which is the order most jurisdictions require.
How to use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- Optionally add a tax rate, which is applied to the discounted price.
Formula
Discounted price = original price − saving
Tax = discounted price × (tax rate ÷ 100)
Final price = discounted price + tax
Tax is applied after the discount, not before. This matters: on a ₹2,500 item with 30% off and 5% tax, taxing first gives a different total from discounting first. Discounting first is standard practice and generally what the law requires.
How the calculation works
The discount is a straightforward percentage of the original price. Tax is then calculated on the reduced amount, because that reduced amount is the actual consideration paid.
Worked example
A ₹2,500 item at 30% off, with 5% tax:
- Saving = 2500 × 0.30 = ₹750
- Price after discount = ₹1,750
- Tax = 1750 × 0.05 = ₹87.50
- Final price = ₹1,837.50
Uses and benefits
- Check a sale price at the till before paying.
- Compare two offers with different discount structures.
- Work out whether a "50% off" claim is real once tax is included.
Frequently asked questions
Multiply the price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. For 30% off ₹2,500: 2500 × 0.30 = ₹750 saved, giving ₹1,750.
After. Tax applies to the amount actually paid, so the discount comes first. This calculator follows that order.
Apply them one after the other, not by adding them together. 20% then a further 10% is not 30% off — it is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28% off in total.
